Israeli railway causes political row

The construction of a new railway to link Jerusalem with illegal Israeli settlements has provoked criticism.

The tram system is being built by French engineering companies on occupied Palestinian land. Critics say their involvement in the project contravenes European policy.

A Nobel peace prize winner’s appeal


Martti Ahtisaari, Finland’s former president and international mediator, has been awarded the Nobel peace prize. In his acceptance speach in Norway, Ahtisaari called on Barack Obama, the US president-elect, to do more in order to bring peace to the Middle East. Al Jazeera’s Hamish MacDonald reports.
