There is growing pressure on Hamas to reconcile with the rival Fatah movement of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president.

Many are urging unity in light of Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip – but how to achieve that is eluding both parties.

Hamas is excluded from any diplomatic discussions, as it is viewed by Israel and many western governments as a “terrorist” organisation.

They were part of boat people who fled Myanmar, where they face persecution, and ended up in Indonesia after being expelled from Thailand.
