Divisions loom over G20 gathering

World leaders including Barack Obama, the US president, will gather in London for final talks on the eve of a G20 summit dogged by divisions on how to tackle the economic crisis.

Obama’s stimulus approach to boost economic growth is facing stiff opposition from European and other governments.

Russia’s military plans loom over talks with US

Barack Obama, the US president will be holding a key meeting Wednesday April 1 with Dimitry Medvedev, his Russian counterpart.

Both sides have indicated they are ready to start rebuilding US-Russian relations.

But suspicion remains, and Russia has made no secret of its plans to beef up its own military power, in the wake of Nato’s expansion towards the east.

Philippine soldiers’ long wait for compensation

More than 60 years after the end of World War II, thousands of Philippine war veterans are to be compensated receiving a one-off payment up to $15,000 for their services in helping the United States defend its former colony.

But some ageing soldiers are saying it is too little, too late.
