Bags of charcoal stacked along roadsides across Mozambique are a common sight. Charcoal is popular because it is cheap, easy to transport and burns longer than wood.
And charcoal-making is a thriving industry that supports many poor families across the country. But the growing demand for charcoal is damaging forests, as Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa reports from the village of Chokwe.

Huge crowds in Libya have welcomed Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bombing convict freed from a Scottish prison. The US, whose nationals accounted for the majority of the 270 that perished in the bombing, has called the decision to free al-Megrahi a “mistake”.

Al Megrahi is the only man to be convicted of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988, which blew up blew up over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. He is now dying of cancer, but for many of his victims’ families, his release on compassionate grounds is a travesty of justice.

Hungary celebrates Berlin Wall anniversary

Hungary is marking 20 years of the Pan-European Picnic, an event which helped bring the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Laszlo Solyom, the country’s president, and Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, helped celebrate the dismantling of the Iron Curtain and communist rule.
