Crimes charges against Iran sought

Payam Akhavan, a former UN war crimes prosecutor at The Hague and co-founder of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre, is working on a petition to send to the UN Security Council and The Hague – that will look into Iran’s post-election violence.

In an interview to Al Jazeera from New York, Akhavan said: “the Iranian regime can’t continue to suppress people unless they resort to mass murder”.

US tells China its bond investments are safe

The White House has reassured China that its hundreds of billions of dollars in US bond investments are safe, despite the global economic crisis.

Wen Jiabao, the Chinese prime minister, has called on Washington to ease worries about the security of those assets.

Brown and Obama in first meeting

On Monday, Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, made his first visit to the United States since Barack Obama became president.

Brown says he will press Obama on the need for global action on the world economic crisis, ahead of next month’s G20 meeting in London.
