Bangladeshi guards return to duty

A week after a deadly mutiny by border guards, members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) are back at work patrolling the border with India.


Ethnic divisions prompt Nepal strike

Hundreds of Nepalese have been stranded along major highways because of roadblocks set up by a general strike from the Tharus minority, an ethnic tribe.

The Tharus say the government has wrongly classified them with the Madhesis majority, demanding a separate identity.

Philippine soldiers’ long wait for compensation

More than 60 years after the end of World War II, thousands of Philippine war veterans are to be compensated receiving a one-off payment up to $15,000 for their services in helping the United States defend its former colony.

But some ageing soldiers are saying it is too little, too late.
