Nine dead in Turkish Airlines plane crash

At least nine people have been killed and 50 others injured in a plane crash in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Turkish Airlines flight 1951 from Istanbul came down just three kilometres short of the runway at Schiphol Airport.

Gulf states fail to monitor Aids cases

According to UN figures from the Middle East, at least 66,000 people contracted HIV in the region in 2007 with an estimated 25-thousand died of AIDS related illnesses that year.

But international organisations say that Arab Gulf states are failing to share information on Aids cases in their countries.

Pakistan protest at Sharif ban

A Pakistani court’s decision to continue banning a key opposition figure from politics, and nullify the election of his brother – has drawn angry crowds to the streets. Nawaz Sharif called for demonstrations after Wednesday’s ruling, a move that threatens to reignite long-standing political tensions. Al Jazeera’s Iram Khan reports.


Davos ministers eye free trade deal

Trade ministers meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos have agreed to step up efforts to support international free trade talks and to guard against protectionism in a bid to counter the world economic crisis.

They vowed that completing the World Trade Organisation’s long-running Doha round to open up global trade was their top priority and pledged to resolve outstanding issues this year.
